Theme of the year: CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS AND THE DISCOVERY OF THE AMERICAS
Humor anticipates history! Two years in advance Bordighera celebrates one of the most illustrious Ligurian characters, to allow a selection of drawings to be exhibited in many cities before the "Colombian" celebrations end in 1992. And in fact, Aosta, Genoa, Matera, Milan, Amsterdam, Geneva, London, Strasbourg, are the stages of this successful event. The interpretations of the theme by the humorists are different, those who reverse the roles between natives and conquistadors and those who affirm their value, those who complain about the discovery of fast food or military power, those who dream of a journey not to discover America but "sun of the future" and who instead dreams of the fashion show on New York's Fifth Avenue!
Vladimir Nenashev, Russia, is awarded the Palme d'Or; Toni Tasco, Belgium, wins the Golden Date for the Fixed Theme and Pietro Ardito designs the poster. Alessandro Bergonzoni wins the Palme d'Or for humorous literature with "The whales remain seated".
Hon. Paolo Emilio Taviani, as President of the Colombians, inaugurates the exhibition while the Hon. Giulio Andreotti is President of the Jury for Literature.
