Joaquín Lavado Tejón Quino

Joaquín Lavado Tejón Quino

Mendoza, 1932 - 2020.
Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón, aka Quino, already held the first exhibition in a bookshop in Buenos Aires in 1962. But 1963 is the date to remember: the comic strip Mafalda was born, the little-big girl who inserted the complexity of the great issues of the 60s, including feminism, into her childhood world. The Mafalda strips had an immediate, overwhelming success in Argentina, on El Mundo, which has been repeated in Italy since 1968, when Mafalda the protester was released, a comic book with a preface by Umberto Eco and which will be followed by other titles dedicated to the "terrible little girl ”. Mafalda, with over 6 million followers, is still an important figure in the humorous cultural world today. In 1973, however, Quino abandoned his character ("I'm out of ideas"), moved to Milan and started again with another genre of cartoons, with a sophisticated and political streak. Starting from the 1990s they were published in the Spanish El País and then merged into volumes such as Quinotherapy and How bad people are for the publisher Salani. He arrived in Bordighera in 1977, won the Golden Dattero and, the following year, the Palme d'Or, also becoming a member of the jury for Drawing. In August 2010 the French government appointed him a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

Salone Internazionale dell'Umorismo

The event could not have lasted for over fifty years without the contribution of numerous "volunteers" and "precepts" who brought enthusiasm and desire to do whatever the task received, with nineteenth-century shifts! From the choice of the drawings, to the preparation of the panels (always the same every year), to the posting with various pins of the hundreds of drawings up to the presence on stage.

We therefore want to thank, in absolutely no order but with equal contributions, all those who come to mind, apologizing if we miss some, but we are ready to fix it!
